Can I Get a Mortgage If I’m on a Skilled Worker Visa?

Answer: Yes, you absolutely can!

Hi, I’m Muhammad, and I’ve been exactly where you are right now. I came to the UK a few years ago on a visa, and like you, I dreamed of owning my first home. Back then, the process was challenging — bigger deposits, longer waits, and perfect credit scores were the norm.

But times have changed. Today, it’s much simpler to get a mortgage while on a Skilled Worker Visa. Let me guide you through the key steps to help you achieve your homeownership dream.

Step 1: Understand the UK Credit Scoring System

When you arrive in the UK, the first thing you should do is learn how credit scoring works.

What Is a Credit File?

Your financial behaviour is tracked by credit reference agencies (CRAs). The main ones are:

  • Experian
  • Equifax
  • TransUnion

Recommended Tool: Check My File

My personal favourite is Check My File — it combines reports from all three agencies to give you a comprehensive view of your credit score.

Tip:

It’s free for the first month. Afterwards, it costs £15/month, so download your file early and cancel if you wish.

Step 2: Improve Your Credit Score

Building a solid credit profile is essential for mortgage approval. Here’s how to strengthen yours:

Register on the Voters Register

Many people assume you must be British to join — that’s not true. I’m originally from Sri Lanka, where voting is citizens-only, but in the UK, residents can register, and it gives your credit score an instant boost.

Pay Bills by Direct Debit

Set up direct debits for:

  • Utility bills (electricity, gas, water)
  • Mobile phone contracts
  • Internet or streaming services

This shows lenders that you manage your money responsibly and pay regularly.

Avoid Missed Payments

Missed or late payments can seriously damage your credit score. Always pay on time — even one missed bill can reduce your chances of approval.

Use a Credit Card Responsibly

If you can, get a credit card and use it wisely. Pay the balance in full each month to show that you can handle credit effectively. Lenders love seeing responsible borrowing habits.

Step 3: Consider Your Length of Stay in the UK

Your time in the UK matters. If you’ve been here only a few weeks, getting a mortgage is unlikely. Most lenders prefer applicants with 2–3 years of UK residency and financial history.

But here’s the good news:

Some lenders are happy to consider applications after just 6 months — especially if you have a strong credit file and stable income.

So, start building your credit profile early to unlock these opportunities faster.

Step 4: Prepare Your Deposit

Your deposit amount plays a major role in your mortgage approval.

Deposit Size Chances of Approval
10% Standard minimum for Skilled Worker Visa applicants
5% Possible with select lenders
0% Rare and very difficult to obtain

Tip:

The higher your deposit, the easier it becomes. A 15–25% deposit gives you access to more lenders and better interest rates.

Step 5: Focus on the Three Key Factors

To summarise, focus on these three essentials:

  • Credit Score & File – Build and maintain a solid record.
  • Length of Stay – Aim for at least 2 years, though 6 months can work in some cases.
  • Deposit – Save as much as possible; lenders love larger deposits.
